“Music has a right to children”
School music programs are disappearing at an alarming rate. This fact has not escaped Chris Davis, founder of “The Realm of Caring”. Although he has a “real job” running a massive Insurance agency in Vail, Colorado and protecting the residents there, he also wanted to ensure that his little girl receives a decent music education. School systems around the country incurred massive budget cuts forcing them to ax the majority of music and art classes due to the “Leave No Child Behind Act”. Davis believes it is on his shoulders to make a difference and that’s why he conceived the aptly named, The Realm of Caring, Inc., a non-profit organization intended to facilitate just that. “Music Has the Right to Children,” is its mission statement.
“I have a six-year old daughter in the Eagle County School System. Every single year, there have been budget cuts. They’ve lost music and art teachers and more money has gone to science, sports and other subjects, which are important also but music and art education has dwindled. We started seeing after-school programs cropping up, but they’re expensive. I thought it was unfortunate that everybody could not afford to attend these after-school programs. I founded The Realm of Caring not only for my daughter’s sake, knowing that she’d have to attend these, but also for some of the kids that wouldn’t be able to afford the opportunity to experience music and art at that age, because that it is the age when natural talent is usually recognized.”
Chris Davis, Board President “The Realm of Caring!”
Music education should be an inalienable right. The day music programs became expendable was a very sad day indeed. There are seven ways to communicate information; words and numbers are only two of them. The other five are movement, sounds, images, objects, and spaces, all of which are provided through the arts. Few would argue that elementary music education isn’t a worthwhile cause. Support was needed to further the cause and what better way to facilitate this effort than music and art festivals all over the country to create awareness.
